Air Conditioner Frequently Asked Questions

Not everyone is an expert on air conditioning equipment, nor does anyone have to be. That’s why we are here, after all. The following are some of the most frequent questions that customers have about their air conditioning equipment:

How often should you have your cooling equipment serviced?

Rule of thumb is generally to have your cooling equipment inspected before you depend on them most. This means that you should have your air conditioning system serviced in the beginning of spring before temperatures begin to rise.

How often should you replace your air filters?

Depending on the type of air filters you use, they should be replaced at least once every 30 or 90 days. Not replacing your air filters often enough can result in poor air quality as well as inefficient cooling.

What should you do if your air conditioner freezes up?

An air conditioner can freeze up if there is either low air flow or low refrigerant charge. If either your indoor or outdoor air conditioning unit freezes up, then you need to contact a professional HVAC technician to come fix the problem ASAP – frozen air conditioners can result in serious damage to your unit.

When should you replace your air conditioner?

If your air conditioner is older than ten years, it’s probably nearing the end of its life cycle and should be replaced with a more efficient model. If your air conditioner has been in need of regular repairs, then it might be more cost effective to just replace it as repair costs will add up over time.

Why is your air conditioner so noisy?

There are numerous reasons why your air conditioner may be making strange noises. These noises can be a result from a blown high voltage fuse or a bad start capacitor, to name a few possibilities. A professional can identify the problem and repair it before the issue worsens.

What is dual zone air conditioning?

Dividing your home into different cooling zones allows you to regulate the temperature in different parts (or zones) of your home. This helps to substantially cut down on energy costs since you’ll no longer have to pump air conditioned air into unoccupied rooms when you want to cool the space you’re in.

What is the best temperature setting for the summer?

Keep your thermostat at 72 degrees at the lowest and make sure your fan is set on AUTO instead of on. This will help keep cooling costs down while still retaining a comfortable environment.

How can you lower your energy costs during the summer?

There are several ways you can do this:

  • Install a programmable thermostat for more control over your cooling to reduce cooling costs.
  • Make sure you have your air conditioner serviced before summer hits.

  • Use weatherstripping to prevent energy leaks.
