10 Signs You Need a Furnace Tune-Up

Although this year’s winter hasn’t been as bad as some of the winters of previous years, odds are still pretty good that most New Jersey residents been putting their furnace to good use. While this is expected, the amount the furnace has to work when the temperatures begin to drop can cause a certain amount of wear and tear. In fact, your furnace may be in need of a tune-up to ensure that it continues to work efficiently and effectively throughout the rest of the winter – especially if you find that there are problems with the way it is heating your home. The following are ten signs that your furnace needs a tune-up:

  1. Your heating bills are going up – Your heating bills should go up as you make more use of your heat, but if you notice a substantial jump in your heating bills, it probably means that there’s something wrong with the efficiency of your furnace. A tune-up will help to make your furnace operate more efficiently in order to keep heating costs down.
  2. Your furnace is making strange sounds – If you hear loud sounds, it means that your blower motor may be in need of repair. Even if the furnace seems to be operating normally, loud sounds could indicate that there are loose components within the furnace, which could cause it to break down later if not repaired.
  3. Your thermostat isn’t working – There may be an issue with your furnace or the thermostat if you are unable to adequately control the heat from your thermostat.
  4. The pilot light isn’t blue – If the pilot light is yellowish, it means that the gas combination is not in good condition, and could mean that the furnace is releasing too much carbon monoxide.
  5. You have an older furnace – A furnace that’s over ten years old should be regularly inspected to ensure it’s running efficiently and effectively.
  6. Your furnace keeps cycling on and off – If your furnace keeps turning on and off, it could be the result of faulty wiring, a malfunctioning thermostat or a broken fan motor.

  7. Your furnace isn’t turning on at all – Obviously, if your furnace won’t turn on at all then you should schedule a tune-up immediately. The last thing you want to do is spend any time during the winter without heat.
  8. Your furnace has been repaired multiple times – If you’ve had to repair your furnace on a frequent basis, such as more than once in the past two years, then you should schedule regular tune-ups to avoid potentially costly problems from arising.
  9. Your furnace is producing strange smells – If you smell rotten eggs or unburnt gas, you need to have your furnace inspected.
  10. Your carbon monoxide detector goes off – This means your furnace isn’t burning fuel completely and needs to be inspected.
